Additional Housing Plans in Singapore

In the Draft Master Plan 2019, the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) plans to increase housing in the Central Business District (CBD) areas to improve accessibility to workplaces and to bring more life to the business district in Singapore after working hours.

As of now, there are 50,000 housing units in the central area with plans to add over 20,000 more homes to the city centre. Out of the 20,000, about 9,000 will be added to the Marina South Precinct.

Several sites will be undergoing redevelopment. Keppel Club will be redeveloped for waterfront housing after the expiry of their lease in 2021. The site near Telok Blangah and Labrador MRT stations will be redeveloped as part of the Greater Southern Waterfront Project which stretches from Pasir Panjang to Marina East.

Some of these redevelopment plans will begin as early as within the next 5 to 10 years while some are still under detailed study.

Apart from the central area, housing development plans have also been made along the Bayshore precinct in the Upper East Coast area and the mature towns of Dakota Crescent and Farrer Park.

Upon completion, the Bayshore precinct will provide about 10,000 housing units. It will be accessible via two MRT stations - Bayshore and Bedok South MRT stations and it focuses on walking and cycling, making the area a car-lite precinct.

These are attempts by URA to progress into sustainable, green, community-centric and car-lite accessible housing.

Going into details, the Farrer Park new housing will cater to those who wish to live near the city. Iconic landmarks will be retained while a sports field and park will be integrated to promote bonding and recreational activities.

Several efforts have also been made to improve connectivity within the precincts. The new community links such as WoodsVista Gallery and North Coast Villa will improve connectivity within Woodlands and provide more amenities.

Apart from housing, three major economic gateways are in the midst of planning to serve as major employment hubs. The eastern gateway centered in the Changi region is complemented by the expansion of Changi Airport and enhanced connectivity which will cater to the aviation industry. The northern gateway covers Woodlands to Punggol with its priority on the agri-tech and food, digital tech and cybersecurity sectors.

These plans by the URA hopes to catalyse the economy to greater heights and growth in different sectors and to promote a sustainable living with accessibility and connectivity, and to make room for the expected influx of over 200,000 additional foreign workers who may be employed by the MNC tenants of the URA projects.
