No Medical Benefits Given To Foreigners in Singapore
Foreigners in Singapore are expected to get covered under their own personal insurance to avoid costly hospital bills in the unfortunate event of an accident while working in Singapore.
Despite being mandatory that companies in Singapore provide Group Insurance coverage for all foreign staff, you must know that the beneficiary of the insurance policy is the company, and not you (apart from your card that allows you to visit certain General Practitioners when you get the common flu).
There have been cases in Singapore where a foreign employee was involved in an accident and broke his leg in three places. Guess what happened? The company had to let him go, and there was no payout to him after his termination. He also couldn't simply book an economy class seat back to India, so he had to pay extra for his specialized repatriation.
On top of losing his job, he couldn't return to work for the next six months, resulting in heavy financial loss and debt.
Singapore Permanent Residents (PRs) - on the other hand - may enjoy up to 60% medical subsidies, and covering the remaining 40% with personal insurance coverage (or cash).
