1.          Mass Rapid Transit (MRT)

The MRT is an expensive rail network that spans across the whole island in every direction. As of today, Singapore has 5 completed MRT lines and 1 more soon to come. They cater to a large majority of the population everyday with intervals of about 2-4 minutes between each stop. It is probably one of the fastest ways to get around our city and all you need is an EZ-Link card.

Visitors can use several cards / passes to board the MRT

(A) Visitors can get the Singapore Tourist Pass (STP) which is a special EZ-link card which allows you unlimited travel for one day at $10, two days at $16 or three days at $20. The pass can be purchased at several TransitLink Ticket Office or at Concession Card Replacement Office at Somerset. Alternatively, they are available 24hours at the automated STP kiosks at Changi Airport MRT station, ideal for those who have just touched down at the airport.

(B) Foreign-issued Mastercard and Visa contactless bank cards can also be used for transport fares in Singapore although foreign admin fees apply.

(C) Visitors can also purchase an Adult Storer Value Smartcard. (EZ-Link / Nets FlashPay)

(D) Lastly, single trip tickets are available for purchase at every MRT station.

2.          Taxis

Taxis are available island-wide in Singapore and they are especially useful to access places that are inaccessible by bus or by train and even on a rainy day where it may be inconvenient to get to an MRT station. Taxi fares are metered fares and they depend on the duration and distance of your ride. Surcharges may apply at peak hours or ERPs or midnight fares. Most taxis can take electronic payments such as card payment however it is always good to check with the driver before boarding the cab. Taxi stands can be found at several malls or at hotels, making it easier to get a cab from these places. Alternatively, they can be flagged down at roadsides and bookings are also available at their hotline.

3.          Bus

Singapore’s bus network is an extensive one covering almost every inch of Singapore. The buses can be boarded at bus stops which are found commonly at MRT stations and along the roads. Bus fares are different from train fares however they require the same payment mode using an EZ-Link card, STP, or a contactless Mastercard or Visa. Most buses are air-conditioned, offering comfort on the commute and some are wheelchair-friendly. Waiting time for buses are longer than that of trains, they can range from a few minutes up to 20minutes.

MRT, taxis and buses have all helped to make Singapore a more interconnected city that has made travelling affordable and easy. Our government continuously fund the development of more transport infrastructure to cater to the large population in more efficient ways.
