How Much Does Tuition Cost in Singapore?

As parents, we definitely want the best for our children and to provide them with great opportunities for success. That is why tuition has become a lucrative industry in recent years as parents have began to place heavier emphasis on the education of their child.

Giving your child tuition lessons are a great way for them to excel academically, but they often come at a financial cost.

Tuition classes are available starting from pre-schoolers and the cost of these home tuition will range from S$15 to S$50 per hour depending on the tutor’s experience. For Diploma or undergraduate tutors, the tuition cost ranges from S$15-S$25 per hour. For full-time tutors or graduate tutors, they can range from S$25-S$30 per hour. NIE-trained tutors will charge a premium for their service and they can range between S$30-S$50 per hour.

Primary school tuition are separated into two categories: Lower primary (1-3) and upper primary (4-6). The cost of lower primary tuition is slightly lower than upper primary. At a tuition centre, tuition costs for lower primary ranges between S$10-S$25 per hour while for upper primary, it ranges between S$15-S$30 per hour.

Home tuition is generally more expensive as compared to tuition centres due to the personalized 1-to-1 teaching style. Moreover, there is greater flexibility to arrange timings to suit the schedule of your child through home tuition. In general, there will be an increase of S$15-S$20 per hour in hourly tuition rates for home tuition. The rates are also dependent on the qualification of the tutor.

Similarly, secondary tuition is also separated into two categories: Lower secondary (1-2) and upper secondary (3-5). For lower secondary, tuition fees range from S$15-S$30 per hour per subject. For upper secondary, due to the specialization of certain subjects, tuition fees will be increased from S$20-S$40 per hour per subject.

Home tuition is also available for secondary schools where prices are generally higher by S$20-S$30 per hour per subject. However, home tuition for secondary school students are for common subjects. For specialized subjects such as humanities, there may be limited options available.

On average, a child would attend four tuition lessons per month for each subject with each lesson lasting about two hours. That would average out to be between S$100-S$300+ per subject.

The cost of sending a child to tuition does not come cheap, but it is often a price that many parents are willing to pay just for their children to have a better foundation in their academics.
