Singapore’s Increasing Population of Foreigners, Permanent Residents and New Citizens

In the latest release of of our annual Population in Brief report, 40% of our Singapore population now comprises of foreigners, permanent residents and new citizens as of June 2018.  Our overall population increased by 0.5% from 2017 to 2018.

Notably, the number of citizenships granted to foreigners of permanent residents has increased. How these citizenships were granted focuses on an individual’s commitment to making Singapore their home and have shared ties with our Singapore community.

As of June 2018, there are roughly 1.6 million foreigners holding various work passes and PRs in Singapore which was about the same as a year ago.

In 2017, 31,849 foreigners were granted permanent residency in Singapore which is similar to the average of 30,000 every year since 2010. This pattern shows the likelihood that the number of people who received their PR status is the same as those who choose to give up their PR status each year.

Overall, the number of permanent residents in Singapore is consistent at around 530,000.
